Half Marathon Training Day #7: 8.4km Slow Jog

Today is an “easy” 8km jog. Nothing easy about it; legs were still saw from the run on Day #5. Due to the slowness of the run (9.16 km/hr) I was able to take my GPS enabled BlackBerry:

I also did some extra analysis of my speed vs altitude and surprise, surprise as I run uphill my speed decreases:

Session:

8.4 km jog in 55 minutes.

Results:

  • Average Heart Rate: 157
  • Max Heart Rate: 172
  • Calories Burned: 864

Half Marathon Training Day #6: Weights

To give my legs a break, today was upper body weight training.

Session:

Stationary Bike, Bench Press, Seated Row, Shoulder Press, Hammer Curl, Triceps, Abs

Results:

  • Average Heart Rate: 117
  • Max Heart Rate: 138
  • Calories Burned: 330

Half Marathon Training Day #5: 15km Run

Today was a big run – 15km along the Dandenong Creek and Eastlink Trail. I was a little slow (average speed 9.57 km/hr) but not bad for my first long run in a few months.
Session:

15km run in 1 hour 34 minutes.

Results:

  • Average Heart Rate: 167
  • Max Heart Rate: 176
  • Calories Burned: 1,758

Half Marathon Training Day #4: A Walk with My Family

It was supposed to be a rest day, but went for a walk with Mel and Ava to the nearby duck pond. I decided to test out the GPS functionality of my Blackberry, so I decided to download a GPS logger. I configured it to log GPS co-ordinates every second and to export to a KML file format. This was the result.

Session:

54 min walk.

Results:

  • Average Heart Rate: forgot my heart rate monitor (again)
  • Max Heart Rate: forgot my heart rate monitor (again)
  • Calories Burned: 220 (est)
  • Number of Blackberry devices that I was able to test its GPS functionality: 1

Half Marathon Training Day #3: 8km Hills

Hills on the treadmill at the gym today watching the top 10 music countdown on Channel V. Interesting note: the top 5 spots were all collaborations. I’m sure there is a management theory somewhere in that.

Session:

8km hills on a treadmill in 49:20 min.

Results:

  • Average Heart Rate: forgot my heart rate monitor
  • Max Heart Rate: forgot my heart rate monitor
  • Calories Burned: 1014

Cross-training is a recovery day so I spent it on the stationary bike with my Blackberry.

Session:

30 min stationary bike ride while answering some emails and reading r/Libertarian.

Results:

  • Average Heart Rate: 113
  • Max Heart Rate: 140
  • Calories Burned: 271

Half Marathon Training Day #1: Fartleks

Fartleks: funny name, serious stuff. Fartlek, in Swedish, means “speed play” and is an interval technique that changes your pace regularly throughout the training session.

Session:

24 min 6x 2min surges and 2 min easy run in-between.

Results:

  • Average Heart Rate: 167
  • Max Heart Rate: 188
  • Calories Burned: 474

Struggled early, but got through it. Post workout endorphins were great.
